The apocalypse is unleashed, the balance between heaven and hell is disturbed and you, one of the four horsemen is charged with the crime for upsetting the balance and sent straight back to earth to find answers about who triggered the end of mankind too soon.

Let me just lay it out from the very start, if you like the brutal, limb-chopping action from God of War and the ”temple” puzzle-solving from the Zelda series, then Darksiders is without a doubt something that you will find exciting. Darksiders is a big mix of diffirent genres, and you envisage this game as paying tribute to the games the developers love and respect.

The art of controlling war

You take the role as War, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Your job is to find out what, or who started the apocalypse to soon and knock his teeth out. The game starts off and throws you straight into the action. Here you are  introduced to the controls, and unfortunately the camera is quite hard to handle. It does not simply have enough sensitivity. If you want to turn the camera around fast to dodge an incoming attack. You can adjust the sensitivity, but it’s not enough. You can get by, but it is rather annoying.

Apart from the slight lack of sensitivity, the controls works fine, some few small reaction problems but nothing that will ruin your experince. As mentioned before, Darksiders combat is based on various combo attacks that has a low learing curve and the combat flow really smooth. It’s easy to get some high combos going without die trying.

A grown up Link game

What happens if you take the Zelda genre and let Kratos from God of War go beserk in Hyrule? You get Darksiders. There are many similar features to the Zelda games, as you venture in the big world of Darksiders you will enter ”Temples” and inside this temple you will puzzle your way through to finally find the big bad boss.

The inspiration from Zelda is very distinct, as you puzzle and fight your way through the temples you will find upgrades, like a big throwing star and other upgrades that will help you to continue throughout the temple and hopefully find and hopefully mash the boss into a pulp.

One might think, ”This is pure plagiarism, why the fuck don’t you come up with something new?” Well, it works fine and it is very entertaining. I don’t see Darksiders as a big rip-off , I rather see it as a tribute, and to be honest. I would go as far to say that I prefer this over the Zelda series. Sure, Zelda is nostalgic even for me. But this feels like a fresh breeze of air into both the action-adventure genre, and finally Zelda and Link got themselves a bit of competition.

Screen-tearing issues on the Xbox 360

When the game was released, the Xbox 360 version suffered from some screen-tearing problems and these problem sadly ruined the gameplay experience. But I don’t want to complain about it for one reason. Vigil Games did something that is rather unusual. They quickly released a patch that removed these problems.

Although it is kind off weird that they released the game when they probably knew the problems with it, but at least they did not ignore the problems like some developers have before.

Final words

Darksiders is a long (about 25 hours for me), well designed and very entertaining game. It takes the Zelda genre to new levels and I love every single bit of it. A big colorful world to explore and lots of challenging bosses to confront. The voice-actors do an outstanding performance, Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) as The Maker is an absolute hit.

Darksiders do have a few minor problems with the controlls and the camera, but it does not really ruin your experience. If you do have a fetish for God of Warish action and Zelda puzzle adventure. Then you can’t go wrong with Darksiders.
